Hanek Matan in Tetum is defined as a tray crafted using leaves of palmyra palm. The tree is commonly found on the coast of Timor Island and it has been a source of life for the locals for decades. Every tribe has its own version of such tray in terms of pattern and size. In everyday use, Hanek Matan functions as a tray for storing weaving equipment as well as ceremonial offerings. The attentively selected leaves and the delicate artistry of craftswomen throughout the process produce an exceptional Hanek Matan.
