Ginger is a flowering plant that originated in Southeast Asia. It’s among the healthiest (and most delicious) spices on the planet. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and it’s closely related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. It’s often called ginger root or, simply, ginger. Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice. It’s sometimes added to processed foods and cosmetics.

Benefits of Ginger:

Relieves Pain: Ginger contains substances known as gingerols that quash inflammation and turn off pain-causing compounds in the body. But if dealing with any kind of chronic pain, talk to a doctor about a long-term treatment plan, since it might be something a plant can’t fix.

Protect Againts Cancer: While no single ingredient has the power to ward off serious disease, ginger does pack a pretty mean punch. Ginger is loaded with antioxidants that help protect the body from cancer.

Reduces Bad Cholesterol: Ginger can help lower LDL cholesterol levels (the bad kind), reducing the risk of heart disease. A small recent study affirmed these findings, demonstrating that control groups who consumed three grams of ginger (that's about half a teaspoon) three times a day experienced a significantly higher reduction in triglyceride and cholesterol than the placebo group.

Boost Immunity: Gingerols fight inflammation and also have antimicrobial and antifungal properties to help fight infections and boost immunity.

Alleviate Cold Symptoms: Ginger tea is a great choice at the onset of a cold. Being diaphoretic, it encourages perspiration and can therefore be used to treat feverish conditions such as influenza or cold. The fresh root (as opposed to dried powder) also appears to have antiviral effects.
