The candlenut tree is originally from the Moluccas Island and grows in various tropical areas. Other than being a spice or food seasoning, Candlenut tree also give multipurpose benefit.



The frequently process of Candlenut is by producing herbal medicine from its skin, leaves, and seeds. Unlike the other trees which have hardwood, candlenut tree wood is quite fragile and not suitable as furniture basic material.



Some say that candlenut tree is originally from Malaysia. Candlenut can quickly spread because it is easily growth anywhere both in high rainfall areas or sandy areas. The area distribution is from Fiji Islands or Pacific Ocean to Africa. In Indonesia, candlenut is known with many names, such as sapiri (Makassar), ampiri (Bugis), bintalo dudula (Gorontalo), sakete (Ternate), hagi (Buru), and kereh (Aceh). Then hambiri (Batak), fruit kareh (Minangkabau), muncang (Sunda), komere (Madura), kameri (Bali), and Kemiri (Java).



The candlenut tree is large trees which height is ranged from 25 to 40 meters and diameter range up to 90 cm and echo range up to 1.5 meters. The stems are thick with gray and brownish bark. There is  smooth texture with vertical stripes on the bark.



The candlenut shape is slightly oval like egg and slightly flat with size of 5-6 cm x 5.7 cm, its color is olive green and skin is covered with velvet hair. The flesh is whitish, easily unbreakable and contains with 1 or 2 seeds. The Candlenut seed is thick and hard, with size of 3 cm x 3 cm, slightly flat with whitish seed color and contain with oil.



The availability of candlenut raw materials in Aceh Province is undoubted. Many areas in Aceh are able to export candlenuts from 30 to 50 tons. The candlenut raw materials are found in several districts/cities. In South Aceh, there are several sub-districts which considered as central production of Candlenut include Menggamat, Kluet Tengah District, Trumon Raya, Bakongan Raya, Kluet Raya, and Meukek District. It is a must that there should be a facility which can help farmers to directly export candlenuts in order to compose the stable price.
