Sisal is an agave sisalana that produces stiff fibers used in rope making. Sisal is a sterile hybrid of uncertain origin, although it was shipped from the port of Sisal in Yucatan. The sisal plant consists of sword-shaped rosettes of leaves about 1.5 to 2 meters tall. The natural fibers from the plant have long been used in various aspects of life, such as textiles, ropes, brushes, roofing, crafts (baskets, mats, rugs), building and construction materials, as well as synthetic fiber production.

Sisal farmers in Nusa Tenggara have approximately 5,000 hectares of land and are continuing to expand. Currently, about 4,000 hectares are productive and the rest are newly planted with sisal. During each harvest season, a minimum of 40 metric tons of sisal fiber is produced each month, and the resulting fibers are sorted and brushed into grades A, B, and C.
