The shallot, also known as bawang merah in Indonesia, is a member of the onion family and is often a cultivar or botanical variety of the species Allium cepa. Previously categorized as a distinct species, A. ascalonicum, which is now thought to be a synonym of the term now in use.

Onion, garlic, leeks, chives, and Chinese onion are near cousins of this plant. It is most likely that onions came from Central or Southwest Asia and then traveled to India and the eastern Mediterranean.
