When ripe it is indicated by a slightly open fruit which makes the brown nutmeg visible. Apart from being dried to make spices, this nutmeg seed can also be extracted to produce nutmeg oil. Nutmeg has production areas spread across Indonesia. In colonial times, the nutmeg plant was spread to various regions giving it various different names. For example, falo in Nias, palo in Minangkabau, nutmeg in Sunda, paala bibinek in Madura, kalapelane in Seram, machetes in Minahasa, and scoka in Halmahera, Tidore and Ternate.
