VCO is well known to be a good source of lauric acid which means that it is rich in medium-length triglycerides.  This, as well as its antibacterial and antiviral qualities have made VCO a popular choice for a variety of personal needs, from dietary to medicinal.  Coconut oil is also used as a base for soap as the lauric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium laurate, which is a soap.
